Old Serials of Zee tv (1993-1999)

Old tv Serials - India

There were some magnificent serials started on Zee tv between 1993 and 1999. At that time Zee was the most popular channel. Zee started all type of serials like family drama, comedy, cartoons, game shows and dubbed serials like Himgiri ka veer. I am trying to make a list of these serials.

 

Rishtey

Rishtey was a single episode story serial. There was a new story in every episode. It was a romantic story serial. Highway, an episode directed by Imtiaz Ali, was also telecasted in this serial. It was a same story of movie Highway. Later Imtiaz ali created a full-fledged movie of same name based on this story.

Saturday Suspense

Saturday Suspense was a suspense thriller serial. There was no super natural events in the serial. Most stories were a murder mystery. In an episode, a school going teenager was mentally-tortured by his mother to force him to be a topper of his class but he comes second always. He loses his mind and brutally kills the boy who comes first always with his bat. I was in class 10th at the time and board examination discussion was quite common in our house. This episode affected me mentally. I couldn't forget the episode ever.

 

Yule Love Story

Yule Love Story was same as serial Rishtey. there were independent romantic episodes in the serial.

Hip Hip Hurray

Hip Hip Hurray was a serial about school days. It was a story of class 11th. Later same class becomes class 12th and the story continues. School name was  De Nobili and I first noticed Vinay Pathak in the serial. His Love interest was the actress who slapped Saif Ali Khan in the movie Dil Chahta Hai. The serial is available on youtube.

 
Junglee Toofan Tyre Puncture

It was a kids show. The main characters were puppet. The same show was on Doordarshan named Tarram Too.

 
Baat Ban Jaaye

Baat Ban Jaaye was a comedy serial starring Rohit Roy, Rakhi Vijan, Nicky Aneja, Bhairavi Raichura and Ranjeet. Ranjeet was a house owner and Bhairavi was his daughter. She loves Rohit but Rohit Loves Nicky. Rohit, Nicky and Rakhi was tenants. This turned into some hilarious sitution.

 

Himgiri ka Veer

Himgiri ka veer was a dubbed serial. Its original name was The Flying Fox of the Snowy Mountain. It was a Hong Kong Television series based on Kung-Fu martial art. Characters' names were changed into hindi to get better connection with the audience. Arjun was the mainprotagonist and his love interest was Rakhi was also a kung fu warrior. Bhai Karn and Bhai veer were other characters. The serial was not placed in the modern era. There were no guns only the sword fight.

Ghar Jamai

This was a comedy serial. The main theme of the serial was North vs South. A south indian R madhvan was a son in law of a punjabi man (Satish Shah). Mandira bedi was the daughter of Satish Shah. Madhvan lives with the family of satish shah that's why the name of the serial was Ghar Jamai. There was a rift between Madhvan and Satish Shah and this caused various humorous situations. Character of Madhvan's Mother in Law was played by Nadiya ke paar actress Sadhana Singh.

 
Hello Friends

Hello Friends was a comedy serial inspired by US television series Friends. In this serial six friends were Cyrus, Nikhil Chinappa, Maria Goretti, Simone Singh and two more characters.

Hudd Kar Di

Hudd Kar Di was a comedy serial starring Dara Singh, Reeta Bhaduri, Mahesh Anand, Shilpa Tulaskar and Sumeet Raghavan. Dara singh was Papaji, the eldest in the family and Reeta Bhaduri was Beeji, his wife. They had son Mahesh Anand and his wife Shilpa Tulaskar. Mahesh and Shilpa had two kids in the serial and two more characters were their driver and his wife who was also a maid.

Hum Paanch

Hum Paanch was a very famous comedy serial. Anand Mathur (Ashok Saraf) was a father of five daughters. His three daughters were from his first wife played by Priya Tendulkar and other two were from second wife Beena. His first wife was deceased and she talks to him through her photo frame. First daughter Meenakshi was a social worker. Second daughter Radhika was a bookish. Third girl Sweety wants to become Miss World and she had wierd obsession for opening doors with singing a song. Fourth daughter Kajal was a local Bhai and wants to become a don. Fifth dauther Chhoti loves Gossips. This makes Anand Mathur a victim and it creates hilarious conditions.

 
Mrs. Madhuri Dixit

Mrs. Madhuri Dixit was started after the success of Hum Aapke Hain Kaun where Renuka Shahahe played the protagonist. Renuka was very famous after HAHK and lead actress of the movie was Madhuri Dixit, hence the name of the serial.

Professor Pyarelal

Professor Pyarelal was started after the success of the serial Hum Paanch. Protagonist was played by Ashok Saraf. He is a professor and a habit of forgetting everyting. This creates hilarious situations.

9 Malabar Hill

9 Malabar Hill was a drama serial starring Pavan Malhotra, Renuka Shahane. It was a story of fishermen who are living near coastal area of Mumbai (then Bombay). It was a pre independent era story.

Aashirwad

Aashirwad was a drama serial starring Govind Namdev and Navin Nishchal. It was a story of their families and the different ways they raise their children.

Amanat

Amanat was a story of traditional indian man Lahori ram and his seven daughters. His oldest daughter Santosh's husband wanted to marry his another daughter Dinky (Played by actress Gracy Singh) but he had to marry oldest daughter Santosh. He played antagonist in the serial.

Banegi Apni Baat

Banegi Apni Baat was a college drama. It was a story of students and their family. Priya loves rahul but Rahul starts loving a new girl played by Firdaus Dadi. Now Priya starts creating trouble for her. Irfan khan, Surekha Sikri and many other popular tv characters were part of this serial.

Chashme Baddoor

Chashme Baddoor was a comedy serial. Sudha Chandran and his beautiful maid(in the serial) made the story memorable.

Chattan

I remembered Shammi Kapoor in the serial and the title song was sung in the voice like Nusrat Fateh ALi Khan.

Campus

Serial Campus was about college politics. Protagonist Shakti was played by Ninad Kamat and one of the Antagonist was Bharat Kapoor. Apart from them Milind Gawli also played an important role in the serial.

Dastaan

Dastaan was a drama about business rivalries and internal affairs. Parmeet Sethi played main protagonist and Ashish Vidyarthi played role of Lankesh i.e. main antagonist.

 
Margarita

Margarita was a story about Goa. It was a love story.

Parampara

Parampara was a tragic drama starring  Shagufta Ali, Mohan Bhandari, Anil Dhawan and Neena Gupta. The serial is available on YouTube.

 

Parivartan

I remembered Govind Namdeo in the serial but I am not able to recall the story.

 

Hasratein

Hasratein was about family drama and external affairs. I remembered Himani Shivpuri was their in the serial. I liked title song more than the serial.

 

Chalo Cinema

Chalo cinema was hosted by director Kunal Kohli but then he was not a director. He criticized many movies. Then he became a director. He directed Hum Tum, Fanaa and thoda pyar thoda magic.

Sailaab 

Sailaab was a good drama serial and it used to watch by  most of the families because of its amazing and clean story. Sachin Khedekar and Renuka Shahane was two main characters of the serial.

Shapath

Shapath was a serial about Police Officers. Kiran Kumar was playing a major character in the serial. After Ajnabee, I saw Kiran Kumar in another serial.

Tara

Tara was the longest running serial before Shanti. Navneet Nisan played the title role and she played a positive character. Alok Nath was also there in the serial.

Mano Ya Na Mano

Mano ya na mano was another horror serial. It was produced by Ekta kapoor. Yes, it was not 'Kano ya na mano' but still produced by Ekta kapoor, similar to Hum Paanch. Those days Ekta Kapoor were creating some good serials. Believe me the show was good and it was not connected with Irfan Khan's Mano ya na Mano which was started on Star One 10 years later.

Woh

Woh was a copy of movie It where a joker kills some college students.

Zee Horror Show

Zee Horror show was the most popular horror show in the Indian history. Only one show could reach near to it and it was first season of Aahat. First episode of Zee Horror show was Dastak where Archana Puran Singh's talking head was on the breakfast table. If anyone has watched this scene in the Sunday Night episode, I bet still he/she can remember this easily. Other popular episodes were Saaya where Surinder Pal (Guru Dron of Mahabharat) played the role of psycho killer Vikranta Jabbar and Taaveez in which a Locket can complete your any wish but you will have to pay for it later. Aafat, Dehshat, Khauf, Jeevan Mrityu, Dhund, Raaz and Khatra were other episodes of the serial. Director of the serial was Ramsay Brothers so you can feel the same thing in the episodes which were present in their movies.

X Zone

X-Zone was one hour horror serial. It has two episodes or single episode story. Some episode were real horror but the theme was same as any other horror show. It could not give much competition to its other competitor Aahat. The serial is available on youtube.

Ek Aur Mahabharat

Ek aur Mahabharat was started only because  B. R. Chopra's Mahabharat was a cult hit and Zee tv wanted to do the same thing but it never happened. No one remembers the show. The cast was  new actors but unlike Mahabharat it didn't make any impact.

 

Aap Ki Adalat

Before India tv, Aap ki Adalat was hosted on Zee tv. Those days Rajat sir was really young :) but the format of the show was same.

Bournvita Quiz Contest

Bournvita Quiz Contest was a children talent show. Different schools' children were participating in the show. The host was Derek O'Brien. The questions were real tough, atleast for me. I hardly had answers of 10% of questions.

India's Most Wanted

India's most wanted was a crime show similar to Crime Petrol and Savdhan India. It was hosted by Suhaib Ilyasi but later he had some differences with Zee so he moved the serial on Doordarshan. Suhaib Ilyasiwas was in news as he was charged for killing his wife but On 5 October 2018, Delhi High Court acquitted him, stating that there was no evidence against him on record to sustain the conviction.

Ikke Pe Ikka

Ikke pe ikka show was hosted by Sajid Khan. It was a comedy show where he impersonated different bollywood personality.

Khana Khazana

Khana Khazana was a cookery show. sanjeev Kapoor was the host of the show and he really cooked some great recepies in the show.

 

Philips Top 10

Phillips top 10 was a countdown songs show. It used to show the song position in the previous week. I particularly remember the rivalry of two songs in the show. It was in 1994 and the songs were 'Tu Cheez badi hai from Mohra and Ek Ladki ko Dekha to from 1942 a Love Story' where Ek Ladki ko dekha beat the other song in most of the weeks.

 

Sa Re Ga Ma Pa

Sa re Ga Ma Pa was started with the name Sa Re Ga Ma. Initial host was Sonu Nigam and new judges were invited in every episode of the show. Most of the judges were veteran music directors and singers like Kalyan Ji Anand Ji, O P Nayyar and Yesudas. The theme was the same as nowdays contest show but it was very authentic with no emotional drama.

 

Saanp Seedi

Saanp Seedi was a game show hosted by Mohan Kapoor. It was not literally played by rules of Snake and ladder, they improvised it in a funny way. When snake bites the contestent, he/she slips into the pool of a water. A guest was invited and there was a small competition between host and the guest. One who loses was hit by the cake on the face.

 

Antakshari

Antakshri was a game show hosted by Annu Kapoor. In the show he really thinks he is a good singer and tries to sing many songs but It always reminds me the scene of his movie Tezab in which Johny Lever false praises his singing by saying "Kabhi kabhi ye tay karna mushkil ho jaata hai ki Teri chai jyada meethi hai ya teri awaaz, kahi tu chai mein kulla to nahi karta". Later show name was changed to Close up Antakshari. First Co Host was Durga Jasraj then it was renuka Shahane and then Pallavi Joshi.

Andaz

Andaz was a drama serial starring Sudesh Berry. Its title song was sung by Kumar Sanu and I really liked the tune "Jaane na koi ye raaz kya hai tera andaz"

 

Dillagi

Dillagi was a comedy serial starring Benjamin Gilani. Later the serial became brand embassador of Essel world. Soul of Benjamin Gilani was transferred into one of the Essel world puppet. Later episodes were to publicize Essel World.

Filmy Chakkar

Filmy Chakkar was a initial comedy serial of Zee starring Satish Shah and Ratna Pathak Shah. The family was obsessed with bollywood movies. They had big pictures of famous bollywood movie scenes. Their kids were also obsessed with filmy style.

Their neighbor was Sulbha Arya and Vijay Kashyap. It was a South Indian family and various episodes they become rival to extend the comedy on next level.
